Brooks Masten, Portland, Oregon, has just set up Maple Leaf Music as a dealer. We are just thrilled; this brings his retail shops up to a grand total of 2. We just got in a Spartan, one of his basic models, in handsome warm red cherry with an ebony fret board, rim cap, and peg head overlay which features his signature Indian Head Penny inlay.
Here’s the story of my Brooks banjo: I was inspired by my banjo playing friend Dave Kiphuth; he owns a fine Brooks banjo and his was the first I’d ever seen. So I did the totally unexpected and ordered myself a fretless from Brooks. Mine was also cherry, my favorite wood. I had it customized with a gift of scrap Brazilian rosewood that we put on the rim cap; the peg head is in matching Brazilian. My mother had just given me a pair of earrings with gold $2.50 pieces, so I had them inlayed in the headstock in her loving memory. And to top it all off, I had the Maple Leaf from the Arthur Smith banjo company inlayed in the scoop. A very personalized instrument which I am enjoying very much!
